Just got Logic Studio a week ago. Pretty happy with this setup except for maxing out my CPU fairly easily (the Steinway alone jitters with 4-5 note chords)

Coming soon: Novation Nocturn controller (ordered - as soon as it ships, it shall be mine)

I replaced just about everything hardware with software synths and such when I was in Logic Pro 7.2.x. When I upgraded to Logic Studio, I sold off a lot of the instruments I wasn't using. Sometimes there can just be too many choices.

  7. I'm new to Logic - trying out someone else's rig and probably buying my own soon to record acoustic/rock/alternative.

I think I'll be using a new aluminum iMac. Can anyone tell me how well the iMac works? Perhaps compared to an older G5? I use a dual 2.7 Ghz G5 right now and wish I could find some kind of comparison to a new 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with plenty of ram.

Left to the MacBookPro is the amazing Eowave device: Eobody2 SensorBox with a pair of sensors: a pressure and a distance sensor.
On the screen of the Mac you can see my last show editing with the LogicPro project open behind the OSCulator and Eowave software's windows.

This picture is old (it's at my old house) and since I have acquired quite a bit of new kit (not the least of which is a new dual-quad MacPro!) - I will posting more about my experiences with logic on Joe Devine dot com, but here's the kit I have now:

o Dual Quad Xeon 2.8Ghz MacPro
    - 10Gb memory
    - 320 Gb system / OS drive
    - 1.5TB Seagate 3Gb/s project drive
    - 1.5TB Seagate 3Gb/s instruments / samples drive

o MacBook Core Duo 2 Ghz
    - 2Gb memory
    - 80 Gb internal drive
    - 750 Gb USB 2.0 project drive
    - 750 Gb USG 2.0 instruments / samples drive

o MacMini Core 2 Duo (logic node)
    - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz
    - 1 GB memory
    - 120 Gb hard drive

    o TC Electronic Powercore Firewire
    o Focusrite LiquidMix
o A fair amount of virtual instruments, including:
    - Spectrasonics Stylus RMX
    - Spectrasonics Omnisphere
    - BFD 2
    - Steinberg Virtual Guitarist 2

o Some cool plugins (in addition to those that run on POCO or LM):
    - Antares AutoTune EVO
    - Waves

I really only used the mini as a logic node when I ran everything off my MacBook - now, it mostly sits around and converts videos for my AppleTV.

I also run VMWare Fusion so I can have access to Acid / SoundForge / Vegas as need be, though I am becoming quite a Mac convert.

    Other studio kit includes:

    o dbx, focusrite, rode preamps
o Rode, Shure, Blue, Neumann microphones
    o Event, Alesis, KRK monitors
    o Kurzweill K2500XS

  15. An update on my setup:

    Korg padKONTROL
    Alesis M1 Mk 2 monitors
    Yamaha AN1x synth

I've sold and/or am selling all of my other music hardware and going entirely "in the box".

The Novation Nocturn I talked about earlier didn't work out for me - I don't like the wrapper aspect of the Automap software that it requires, and its integration with Logic's built-in instruments is virtually nonexistent.

I've changed my hardware interface from an M-Audio FireWire Solo to an Edirol M-16DX, which is USB 2.0. It works great as an audio interface with all kinds of ports, and even better is the ability to use the mixer control area (a separate module from the audio ports on the M-16DX) as a DAW controller in Logic. Much cheaper than buying a computer interface, mixer, and DAW controller separately.

WHY IS MY DESKTOP MAXING OUT CPU WITH ONLY FOUR TRACKS??? I am SO disappointed with Logic! I love the sound of it, and the possibilities but I can't get anything done!! I have the piano sampler and Ultrabeat on and it just freaks out to the point of absolute uselessness.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP WITH A FIX, OR SOMETHING. THE MANUAL IS USELESS!!

  17. Hey Bradford, try this... It'll probably work:

Load the Piano sample and play the piano or the keys a bit, somehow the system "memorizes" the notes or recognizes the notes easier (probably loads them into the RAM).

Aftery playing note by note try playing back your track it 'shouldn't' max out anymore.

Let us know how it went.

    Cheers.

  19. Folks - have a question for you.
I'm new to this whole DAW world, having always used a standalone workstation to create music.

Now, I bought Logic Studio and I'm wondering about the overall setup. I have connected my MO6 via USB to the Mac Pro and also via an optical cable to the digital in of the Mac.

Now I see all you guys having fancy M-Audio MIDI adpaters and some using Duet or similar. If I just have this one instrument connected, is there really a need for all these other things?

I want to do 2 things with my setup:

    1. Play the software instruments in Logic (for which I need the MIDI/USB connection, right?)
    2. Play the MO6 instruments (real instrument tracks) to make use of the arppegiators etc.) (for which I need the additional audio input, right?

Sorry if all this appears naive, but I'm just starting with this!

    Thanks
    Torsten

  26. What a great Blog, I am new to blogs so this possible won't make it!!
Have watched others for recording with their Macbooks and decided to make the plunge and purchased A Macbook Pro along with Logic Pro Studio. I have assorted recording stuff which I collected during my career with bands, as you do! I now perform solo and got hooked on looping starting with a Line 6 with 36 seconds of loop worked my way up to the biggest Boss Loop pedal. Along with this out the door went biological reality. I hope to use my Edirol M16DX with The Mac and Logic. I used the Edirol M16DX with Sonar. I would appreciate advice from anyone with a similar set up to save time and blood curdling screams. I have messed around slightly with Garageband and am frustrated with some of the features, i.e unable to trim clips etc.

  29. Ey up Cactusrex.

I'm about to jump into the deep end. Never owned or really used a mac ever before, although I will do very soon. Your blog has given me some great pointers - plus being a really good read - so just wanted to comment and say thanks.

I'm kinda scared about moving away from the good old Windows Laptop [maybe I'll keep him for portable recordings]. Have to say here that I won't turn out like that reviewer guy, who seemed to piss off the whole Mac-user-world by saying his new iMac is gay [shit]. Sooo funny. I wish I could read his original review. If you have a copy please let me know.

Going to purchase the 24inch iMac, with the RAM upgrade/ all the other gubbins for christmas. Just wondering if you think my old USB Interface [Edirol UA25 thingy] will kind of make the whole upgrade to mac pointless. Should I definitely go and upgrade to a new firewire interface - or will the USB do?
