Logic Studio Recording External Instruments

Buzz It Share
Hello, I've made this video tutorial on how to record your hardware instruments in Logic Pro 8, especially instruments that can send and receive MIDI messages.

In this case we are using the Novation K-Station synthesizer to record the intro of Peter Schilling's "Major Tom".

The tutorial also covers how to convert your external instrument MIDI regions into audio.

Happy Fête de la Musique

Buzz It Share
It's the 21st of June which means today is the Fête de la Musique, a holiday dedicated to music.
It all began in France and it has extended to other countries via the French diaspora.

What does that mean?

In Paris, for instance - Musicians play all around town, all genres and musics of the world, no matter where you walk you'll hear musicians playing in the street, in forums in bars and in all kinds of venues.

Normally people plan their "Fête de la Musique" day by looking at programs and deciding where to go and to sum it up and put it in very simple words it goes like this:

"there's a concert of this band here and then we'll go to this museum there to see this orchestra and then there's this guitarrist guy I like playing in this square and in the night we'll dance to this DJs' tunes..."

Let me tell you... it's MASSIVE, musicians get to ask permission to their bosses to make a pause at work to play, heck some companies even host their own Fête de la Musique, I remember even performing with one of my bosses my first company years ago.

So happy Fête de la Musique and I sincerily wish it may it be adopted in all countries as "labor day" has.

See the official posters from around the world:

Brisbane - Australia / Pasadena CA / Yverdon-les-Bains -Switzerland

New York - NY / Torun Poland / Luxembourg

Hanover - Germany / Rome - Italy / Katmandu - Nepal

See them all here

There is no Logic Studio for Windows PCs

Buzz It Share
It might seem obvious for most of you that Logic Studio does not ship for the Windows OS nor for any OS that is not Apple's own.

I write this because a lot of people (according to the site's traffic statistics) land here via Google searches such as "Logic for PC" or "Logic Studio for PC".

There are 2 ways to have a copy of Logic working on a non-Apple PC and, to be honest, they are not the greatest:

1. Get an old copy of Emagic's Logic for Windows
2. Get a pirated version of Mac OS X for PC

Here are the downfalls:

On the first option you will certainly NOT be up to date as the last Logic version that shipped for Windows was on 2002 (when Apple bought Emagic).

On the second option here are some thoughts:

a. It's illegal
b. It's cumbersome
c. It's not stable
d. There are no updates
e. No Mac experience

I used to be a PC musician curious about "the Mac experience" that everyone was gushing about and I thought it was just hype, I even used to say "damn it I'm a PC guy I build my own computers and I ain't going Mac, f*ck those overpriced-incompatible fruit-labeled boxes".

Then I grew terribly tired of playing the fireman-cum-mechanic-cum-neurosurgeon-cum-plumber-cum-witch doctor with my PCs trying to reduce latency, tweaking every aspect of Windows to make it work for my music, trying to find the right set of components... I then fell for Apple's marketing gimmick "it just works"... It has been exactly that, for me.

I have 2 concrete and solid words to sum it up and to explain why it has been that great:

Core Audio

(June 25th update, for those of you who wonder why, this is exactly the kind of stuff that made me leave Windows, read this Bill Gates email -apparently it's the real deal- where he rants about his own Windows experience, straight from the horse's mouth eh?)

Logic Studio Missing Samples, Instruments fix

Buzz It Share
A lot of people have pointed out that some instruments like "Hybrid Morph" from Garageband (that you can use in Logic Pro) as well as some samples are missing and you might get messages like this:

I have an upgraded version of Logic Studio (I was using Logic Express 7) and I also had this problem.

Here's a quick fix: just install Logic Pro again and it should work, no, I'm NOT talking about installing the whole Logic Studio, just Logic pro, it should take you about 15 minutes, it has worked well for me:

1. Use the installer in your Logic Studio installer disk and in custom install menu remove everything that is not Logic Pro (for some reason you cannot remove the Apple Loops Utility but that is not a problem)

2. Click on upgrade and wait until the whole process finishes (depending on your machine the time will vary, it took about 15 minutes for me).

3. You're done! no more "missing" messages, and here's the prodigal son, Mr. Hybrid Morph...

Does this work for you? let us know via the comments section, if you know of anyone who has had this problem don't forget to share!

Happy composing/arranging/mixing/mastering/bouncing!
