Logic Studio Wish list - What I got

Buzz It Share
Not longtime ago I wrote about the things I would have liked to see in a new LS, let's see what I got and what I didn't get with this new release shall we? ;)

Of course, bare in mind the following:
1. This was my personal wish list I'm sure you have yours too.
2. What I didn't get on this new version I will, probably on the next iterations of LS.
3. Even if I did not get some things I wanted we have some other terrific, amazingly great new features.

Mkay....

What I wanted:
1. More guitar effects! bare with me, don't roll your eyes and think it's petty, better wahs, tremolos, and more amp simulation never hurts. Don't forget that a lot of guitarists use LS. (just look at the poll here on the side)

What I got:
It seems as if they knew exactly what I wanted. this is IT. Couldn't have been better, more wahs a real tremolo, joy. A 'wall of amps' of sorts. The sounds are truly amazing. I would even go as far as to say that it can directly and confidently compete against whatever Line6 offers. What say you guitarists?

What I wanted:
2. Real time Time Stretching/pitch correction: You know, making your audio tracks change either pitch or tempo or both but independently, on the fly.
All this would be better if it could be applied to Apple Loops.
This may sound far fetched but yeah, Autotune or Melodyne style would be lovely.

What I got:
Time stretch, check, pitch correction I'm not so sure... while now regions can be edited seamlessly time-wise there is still no say (unless I'm missing it) about tuning features, tempo can be corrected easily, but what about pitch? Anyone who could help on this matter? I'll come back and edit this post to update the result.

What I wanted:
3. Simpler ReWire implementation: not having to create first an external MIDI track and then a bus for ReWire tracks, just a single track that would act as both, like an instrument track, would that destroy the world? naa, it would probably make it a better place.

For those who do not like to see changes in that department a toggle switch would allow the "Legacy Method" or the old style way of "ReWire-ing".

What I got:
'Nothin'

What I wanted:
4. Speaking about ReWire, make MainStage a ReWire host/client, a lot of people would love to use it along with Ableton Live or Propellerheads Reason.
If not, why not let MainStage receive transport messages? and if it's not much to ask, to send MIDI.

I know, the video where Trent Reznor talks about MainStage and says it's the best thing around looks impressive, but most of us are not NiN and we do not have an army of roadies, sound engineers or truckloads of gear so don't just ignore the hords of electronic musicians and dj wannabes who would like to take their laptops on a live show and have top quality effects and instruments (like Ultrabeat) well sequenced and synched.

What I got:
Nailed it, ReWire in MainStage, now I can play with my other toys, and my dream of having Ableton and Ultrabeat working together in sync has become a reality, nice.

What I wanted:
5. Simpler Arpeggiator implementation: (yeah that means not having to use the Environment) oh well, you know it's not rocket science but wouldn't it be nice if it would just work like a plug-in? They have got the vocoder right, now it's the arpeggiator's turn.

What I got:
'Nothin'

What I wanted:
6. OSC implementation: Open Sound Control is the next thing after MIDI, yeah, trust me, IT IS, just give up, embrace it. We would be able to use almost any piece of hardware like Wii-motes, iPhones, home-made step sequencers you name it. Plus, we wouldn't have to hack our way into Logic via Max MSP.

What I got:
'Nothin'

What I wanted:
7. New or updated instruments: We cannot complain about the 40+/- instruments that come with LS, hey, some of may even be perfect, but who ever said musicians do not appreciate new stuff? You know, the ES1 debuted 10 years ago!

What I got:
'Nothin' Unless you count the new guitar effects as instruments, but I wouldn't.

So far it's a 2.5 out of 7
(0.5 because so far no word on the pitch correction features).

But hey, my little gut tells me that this was just a temporary upgrade to compete against Pro-Tools / Record and more great things are coming.

What do you think?
Are you mega-happy with this update?
Or like me, you think "Meh... these features should have been there long ago, come on show me more..."

Cheers.

The NEW Logic Studio

Buzz It Share

The wait is officially over boys and girls, we have a new Logic Studio, I'll write more about it when I get my dirty hands on it I promise... in the mean time... (looks into wallet...) bwahahaha...

Insofar:

FLEX TIME: This is a new set of tools and well, they are mainly to stretch audio, and not only that, you can drag it within a region, yeah, no cutting, it seems that good.
What is really cool though is that in the project's image there's a picture of Thievery Corporation aeternal users of Cakewalk, welcome to the Mac world btw guys.

Audio Quantize, it seems to work like MIDI it will align all your unruly beats to either the project's grid or to other adjacent, audio files. In the video a bass line is seamlessly aligned with a drum beat.

Varispeed, remember how jealous and bitchy some of us were getting because of Propellerheads Record and Ableton Live and ProTools ability to manipulate tempo and sound altogether? Yeah, now we have that in LS folks.

Selective Track Import: You can import tracks from other projects including plugins, mixer settings (even aux sends, yay!) and even if your other projects are set in a different tempo they can easily conform to your new project's tempo. Woohooo....

Expanded Take Folder Editing: Man, I swear about a year ago I dreamed I could do this and when I woke up I was angry it didn't exist. Trite as it sounds this is a dream come true.
Remember Comping? now you can cut, copy and move regions INSIDE a take folder. They should have named it "Mega ArchComping Platinum Diamond + God" You have got to see the video of how it works.

Mainstage gets ReWire support!: They say FULL ReWire support, that means audio and MIDI I hope.

Probably Mainstage has become a direct competitor to Ableton Live (or a complement) you can now loop, play loops and record performances.

Ah... so many new things...
